Desert Island Discs

Inspired by Martin's blog here's my choice of 7 discs for a desert island:

(look at all this space - can't I pick 3 more??)

Jeff Buckley - Grace. Undoubtedly one of the best albums ever made. I can't describe it. You'll have to go and buy it.

U2 - All That You Can't Leave Behind. I love this album. Grace is the obvious song to pick out but actually, my favourite is Walk On. It's about Aung Sang Suu Kyi, leader of the National League for Democracy in Burma but that's all for another post.

Luciano Pavarotti - Ti Adoro. Don't worry, I'm not about to reveal that I'm the founder member of Pav's fan club. I love this album simply because of the last track, Caruso where the round tenor is joined by guitarist, Jeff Beck. Quite beautiful.

Michael Nyman - Soundtrack from The Draughtsman's Contract. Nyman is my favourite composer. I love the way he uses old baroque styles to create new 20th century style music. I like all of his stuff but Draughtsman is my favourite film.

Cafe Del Mar - Aria. Sound meisters, Cafe Del Mar, take some of the best operatic arias and do their stuff. It's prayerful. I love it.

Kylie - Greatest Hits. I grew up with this stuff. Me and my mates, about 8 or 9 years old, dancing the Locomotion round the playground.

Cruel Intentions Soundtrack. I chose this because it lets me get in a stack of great artists without picking more than 7 albums. Cheat? Me? But this is a great soundtrack. Where else can you find Counting Crows, Pulp, Skunk Anansie, the Verve, Aimee Mann and others all on one CD?

There - that's my list. I'm sure it'll be different tomorrow!

  1. Oh, I'm an inspiration... If I'd done albums, I'd have included Grace for sure. I think Achtung Baby, War, Pop, The Joshua Tree and The Unforgettable Fire are all better than All That You Can't Leave Behind though. Did Michael Nyman do the piano soundtrack, with The Heart Asks Pleasure First? Cos I love that. That Counting Crows is luvverly. That will be all, and good night to you.
