onwards and backwards

hmm. I'm aware that my reading list is getting progressively less intellectual. Oh well!

My next project is to read Roald Dahl in chronological order. Probably only his children's fiction at this stage but I might go back for his adult stuff later. So... here's my list:

James and the Giant Peach (1961)

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964)

The Magic Finger (1966)
Fantastic Mr Fox (1970)
Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator (1972)
Danny the Champion of the World (1975)
The Enormous Crocodile (1978)
The Twits (1980)
George's Marvellous Medicine (1981)
The BFG (1982)
Revolting Rhymes (1982)
The Witches (1983)
Dirty Beasts (1983)
The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me (1985)
Matilda (1988)
Rhyme Stew (1989)
Esio Trot (1990)
The Vicar of Nibbleswicke (1991)

18 books. Many of them quite short though so it shouldn't take too long.

I'm surprised at how old most of these books are - it doesn't come across in the books at all really. They barely date. Sure, the kids don't have playstations and no-one emails and all but you really don't notice when you're reading.

I'm looking forward to this...

  1. Ah, those were the days... i think we have most of those scattered round the multitude of bookshelves in the house. Quality fiction that fuels the imagination.

  2. My excuse is that "children's fiction" will be on the reading list for my PGCE course....

  3. Never be ashamed of it! I now read children's books a lot of the time! They offer a wonderful respite from the rather scary and grown up world of work!
